TOPIC: How Sin Opens the Door for Attacks TEXT: 2 Samuel 12:1-14 AIMS: 1. To understand how sin removes God’s protective covering. 2. To learn that God’s moral laws govern the universe. INTRODUCTION God created the universe to operate according to laws and principles. Just as there are physical laws that govern nature, there are spiritual laws that govern our relationship with God. A Christian who breaks these laws (because he/she lives under grace and not under the law), most times, suffers the consequences of his/her actions even after repenting and being forgiven by God. Obedience brings blessings and protection, while sin opens the door for troubles, afflictions, and attacks. King David experienced God’s favor and protection for many years. However, after his sin with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah, he opened the door for severe troubles in his life and family. Though God forgave David when he repented, the consequences of his actions still followed him. As a result, David lost four of his children, namely: Bathsheba’s first child, Amnon, Absalom and Adonijah, just as David declared that the man who had done this “shall restore the lamb fourfold” (2 Samuel 12:6). Sin creates a breach in the protective hedge that God places around His people. It gives the enemy legal grounds to afflict and oppress. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION 1. How does sin opens doors for attacks? Psalm 119:67. 2. How did David’s sin open the door for trouble in his life? 3. Why do people suffer the consequences of their sins even after repenting and receiving forgiveness from God? 4. Does grace totally erase the consequences of our disobedience? CONCLUSION Sin is not merely the breaking of God’s commandments; it is a violation of spiritual laws that govern our relationship with God. While God’s mercy provides forgiveness for the repentant sinner, sin often leaves consequences that can affect our lives and those around us. David’s experience teaches us that sin can open doors to affliction, loss, and attacks when we stray from God’s ways. Therefore, believers must walk in obedience, maintain a repentant heart, and remain under God’s protective covering, knowing that righteousness is a shield and a defense against many troubles. FOOD FOR THOUGHT “If a single act of sin could open the door to years of sorrow in the life of a man after God’s own heart, how careful should we be to guard our hearts, walk in obedience, and quickly repent whenever we fall?” MEMORY VERSE Psalm 119:67 (KJV) “Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.”
