TEXTS:
1 Corinthians 7:3-5; Hebrews 13:4; Proverbs 5:18-19; Genesis 2:25; 1 Timothy 2:9-10; Proverbs 7:10.
AIMS:
- To understand the difference between public modesty and private marital intimacy.
- To teach married couples that sexual attraction and intimacy within marriage are part of God’s design.
- To encourage Christians to maintain appropriate modesty around children, relatives, and other people while enjoying legitimate intimacy within marriage.
- To warn against allowing worldly or sexually immoral standards to define marital intimacy.
INTRODUCTION
In our previous studies on godly dressing, we have considered how Christians should dress in a way that reflects holiness, modesty, dignity, and the character of Christ. However, we must also understand that the standard of dressing in public is not necessarily the same as the standard of dressing in the privacy of marriage.
A married woman should dress decently and modestly when she goes outside the home. She should not expose what belongs exclusively to her husband. Likewise, a married man should conduct himself with modesty and dignity. Our bodies should not be presented publicly in a sexually provocative manner.
However, marriage creates a legitimate private relationship between a husband and wife. Hebrews 13:4 says, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled.” God did not create sexual intimacy only for reproduction; He also designed marriage as a relationship of love, companionship, affection, and sexual enjoyment between husband and wife.
Genesis 2:25 says, “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” Their nakedness was not sinful because it was within the covenant relationship God had established between them. It is the same today, nakedness before your spouse is not sinful.
Therefore, Christians should not confuse public modesty with marital intimacy. A woman who would never appear half-dressed before other people may dress differently in the privacy of her bedroom with her husband. A husband and wife may express their sexual attraction to one another in ways that would be completely inappropriate outside their marriage.
The Bible even speaks positively about marital sexual attraction. Proverbs 5:18-19 says, “Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth… and be thou ravished always with her love.” The Song of Solomon also openly celebrates the beauty and attractiveness of a husband and wife.
There is therefore nothing sinful about a wife wanting to look sexually attractive to her husband or a husband wanting to look attractive to his wife. Sexual attraction within marriage is not carnality; it is part of the marital relationship God created.
At the same time, the home may contain children, relatives, visitors, or other people. The privacy of marriage does not mean that a married couple should walk around the house exposing their bodies before their children or other family members. Children should not be exposed to the sexual intimacy or nakedness that belongs to their parents’ marriage.
Furthermore, not everything marketed as “sexy” is necessarily appropriate for a Christian marriage. Christians must still exercise discernment. Clothing deliberately associated with prostitution, pornography, sexual exploitation, or immoral practices should not simply be accepted because it is being worn privately. Our bodies and sexuality belong under the lordship of Christ.
The Bible also teaches that husband and wife have a responsibility toward one another sexually. Paul writes:
“Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.”
— 1 Corinthians 7:3
The husband’s body does not belong to him alone, and the wife’s body does not belong to her alone. Within marriage, they have a mutual responsibility to love, honour, and satisfy one another.
Therefore, dressing can also be part of expressing love and sexual affection toward one’s spouse. A husband or wife should not deliberately neglect their appearance or sexual relationship when they know their spouse desires affection and intimacy.
Godly dressing therefore has different contexts. What is appropriate in the bedroom may not be appropriate in the living room with children, and what is appropriate in the home may not be appropriate in public. In every situation, the Christian should ask: Does this honour God, respect my spouse, preserve appropriate boundaries, and reflect holiness?
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
- What is the biblical purpose of sexual intimacy in marriage? Genesis 2:24-25; Proverbs 5:18-19; Hebrews 13:4.
- Does the Bible present nakedness between husband and wife as sinful? Genesis 2:25; Hebrews 13:4.
- Is it carnal if a husband wants his wife to dress sexy in their bedroom? Proverbs 5:18-19.
- Should Christian parents expose their nakedness or sexual intimacy to their children? Ephesians 5:3-4; 1 Corinthians 13:5.
CONCLUSION
Godly dressing must be understood according to context, purpose, and biblical boundaries. The modesty expected in public does not mean that a husband and wife must dress exactly the same way when they are alone in the privacy of their marriage.
God created sexual attraction and intimacy within marriage, and Scripture encourages husbands and wives to love, desire, and satisfy one another.
At the same time, Christian freedom in marriage does not remove the need for holiness and wisdom. Children, relatives, and visitors should not be exposed to the private sexual aspects of their parents’ marriage. What belongs to the marriage should remain within the marriage.
A Christian should therefore know the difference between public modesty, family modesty, and private marital intimacy. We should not bring private intimacy into public, nor should we treat legitimate marital intimacy as though it were sinful.
The ultimate question is not merely, “Is this clothing sexy?” The question is, “Who am I dressing for, where am I wearing it, what is my purpose, and does it honour God?”
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Am I dressing in a way that preserves modesty before others while also expressing love, affection, and sexual attraction toward my spouse within the privacy of our marriage?
MEMORY VERSE
